Our Lord Christ the King Church began on December 5, 1926, with 225 worshippers attending their first Mass in the Lin-Del Building at Mt. Lookout Square. With no permanent building or electricity, the faithful gathered under the light of car headlights, with Father Edward J. Quinn, a former World War I chaplain, using his Army Mass kit. Established by Pope Pius XI, the parish was the first dedicated to Our Lord under the title “King.”
In 1927, a temporary church was constructed by parish volunteers in just 25 days on the site of the current church. World War II inflation delayed construction of a permanent church, but by 1957, the new Indiana limestone church designed by architect Edward J. Schulte was dedicated.
Cardinal Pacelli School, established in 1927, began with 108 students and quickly grew, with plans for expansion in the 1930s. Today, over 400 students are enrolled in preschool through eighth grade.
In 2018, the Cross and Crown Atrium was completed, linking the school, church, and parish into a unified space. This new gathering area includes a large community room, cafeteria, parish offices, and updated facilities, made possible by the City on the Hill capital campaign. As the church continues to grow, it remains a vibrant community dedicated to faith, education, and service.
